Utah Wildflowers
Every photograph is a love letter you'll never read.
Name:utahwildflowers
Website:http://marchenland.livejournal.com
Bio:A secondary journal to post photos and info about weeds and flowers I identify and photograph. My primary area to study is the Jordan River Parkway, but I'll post photos and info from other areas as well.

I probably won't add friends to this journal, since it's a lot of upkeep and nothing here will be private anyway (unless I have to make REALLY boring lists or research stuff, which won't be of any interest anyway).

Sources:
Whitson, Tom. Weeds of the West.
The bible of western weeds, but difficult to use in the field as it's organized by family. You have to flip through 600 pages to find what you're looking for. Also, provides no information on things such as when a flower is in bloom, and rarely if ever provides photos of the plant in different seasons.

National Audubon Society. Field Guide to Wildflowers: Western Region.
Much easier to use in the field, and packed with thousands of plants, organized by color.

Falcon Guide. Northern Rocky Mountain Wildflowers.
Not as many plants, and specific for the Northern Rockies, which has plenty of overlap with Utah, but also covers Canada and the northern states.

Shaw, Richard J. Utah Wildflowers.
My first one, bought when I first moved to Utah. Although it is hit and miss on many plants, not being particularly extensive, it is a good guide for the field and is organized by bloom color.

Vance, F.R., J.R., Jowset, and J.S. McLean. Wildflowers Across the Prairies.

Usborne Spotter's Guides. Wild Flowers of North America.
A child's book, with drawings instead of photos, and far too much breadth to be of much use.

Underhill, J. E. (Ted). Alpine Wildflowers, Roadside Wildflowers of the Northwest, and Sagebrush Wildflowers.

Whitney, Stephen R. A Field Guide to the West Coast Mountains.

Buchanan, Hayle. Living Color: Wildflower Communities of Bryce Canyon and Cedar Breaks.

Orr, Robert T. and Margaret C. Wildflowers of Western America.

Welsh, Stanley L. Wildflowers of Zion National Park.

Rickett, Harold William, The New Field Guide of American Wildflowers.

Welsh, Stanley L. Flowers of the Canyon Country.

Strickler, Dee. Alpine Wildflowers: Showy Wildflowers of the Alpine and Subalpine Areas of the Northern Rocky Mountain States and Forest Wildflowers: Showy Wildflowers of the Woods, Mountains, and Forests of the Northern Rocky Mountain States.

Kershaw, MacKinnon, and Pojar. Plants of the Rocky Mountains.

Books I am interested in but don't yet own:
  • Falcon Guide. Southern Rocky Mountain Wildflowers. I haven't used this one, but plan to buy it soon. If it's like the Northern guide, above, it should be an excellent guide.
  • Rocky Mountain Wildflowers. Another one I haven't used yet. I plan to look at it before buying it.
Duft, Joseph F. and Mosely, Robert K. Alpine Wildflowers of the Rocky Mountains.
Dannen, Kent and Donna. Rocky Mountain Wildflowers.
Wingate, Janet L. Rocky Mountain Flower Finder: a Guide to Wildflowers Found Below Tree Line in the Rocky Mountains.
Spellenberg, Richard. National Audubon Society Field Guide to North American Wildflowers, Western Region.
Craighead, John J.; Davis, Ray J.; Craighead Jr, F. A Field Guide to Rocky Mountain Wildflowers from Northern Arizona and New Mexico to British Columbia.
